Lingira Island

Location: 3o miles from Jinja // Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria is the second largest fresh water lake in the world with a staggering 3000 islands in it. These islands are used to serve as hiding places for refugees, immigrants, as well as criminals who fled from the arm of the law after commiting crimes on the mainland. They soon became havens of lawless people who formed families, took on several sexual partners and giving the prevalence of HIV/AIDS a clear highway.

On this particular island, 56% of its dwellers are infected with HIV and upon arrival, one is greeted by hundreds of children among whom many are either double or single orphans, abandoned, or at risk children.

As a result, FDLM started a program reaching out to these children through the provision of education, medical assistance and feeding 66 kids.  We currently are working to implement this children’s home which is in its initial stages of construction.
